The Top Six Jaffna Restaurants in Colombo
ShareThe Top Six Jaffna Restaurants in Colombo
A northern flavour in Sri Lanka’s cultural capital
For foodie travellers, Sri Lanka is a magnet. Its diverse regional dishes offer a myriad of flavours and there’s nowhere better to dive in and enjoy the comparisons than in Colombo. One of the most distinctive and lesser-known cuisines you’ll find here comes from the far north of the island, in the area surrounding the city of Jaffna. It offers a bolder, more robust flavour with dishes that are coconut-rich and unapologetically spicy.
For decades, the region of Jaffna remained largely inaccessible due to the civil war. Since peace returned in 2009, travellers and Sri Lankans alike have rediscovered both the region, its produce and its distinctive cuisine. Heavily influenced by the Tamil culture, the food reflects the resilience and creativity of the Tamil people. This connection means that traditional recipes are closely related to South Indian food, Jaffna dishes are typically hotter and heavier on black pepper than other regional dishes in Sri Lanka, and you’ll find rich sauces of roasted spices, curry leaves and coconut.
Many of the key ingredients in Jaffna food come from the Palmyrah tree, which is commonplace in the north of the island. You’ll find jelly-like nungu from the young palm fruit eaten fresh from the tree, the pulp of the ripened fruit used to make the tea-time panaattu delicacies and palm jaggery, made from the tee’s sap, widely replacing sugar as a natural, healthy alternative. Even the young roots of the trees are boiled and sun-dried to form crunchy, calcium-rich pulukodiyal snacks.
The standout highlight of Jaffna food has to be the crab curry, which is powerfully spicy and rich, infused with chilli, curry powder and coconut cream. It’s traditionally eaten with your hands, cracking the shells to get to the juicy meat inside. You’ll often find it served with string hoppers and a dash of Sri Lanka’s prized coconut relish, pol sambol.
These specialities, and many more, can be found in Colombo. We’ve found that the best Jaffna restaurants here tend to be in Wellawatte, an area known affectionately as ‘Little Jaffna’, where a large northern Sri Lankan community settled during the war years. There’s a good choice of opportunities here to explore this northern cuisine, from casual roadside eateries to refined hotel dining rooms and this guide shares our favourites.
Jaffna Restaurants in Colombo
Palmyrah: Refined Jaffna Dining
In our book, this is Colombo’s flagship Jaffna restaurant, and we recommend it as a top tip for anyone wanting an introduction to this fabulous cuisine. Set within the Renuka Hotel in Kollupitiya, it combines a sophisticated ambience with an extensive menu of northern specialities.
The menu is extensive, offering seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes, all prepared using the traditional techniques from Jaffna. Our favourite dish here is the chilli crab served with egg hoppers (appam), alongside creamy milk hoppers that offer the dish a delicate hint of sweetness. The dessert menu is equally impressive, boasting traditional treats such as rasavalli kilangu, a vibrant purple yam porridge.
Ideal for: a special dinner or first taste of Jaffna cuisine in an elegant setting.
Yaal Restaurant: Little Jaffna Classic
Situated on Marine Drive in Wellawatte, Yaal Restaurant is a long-standing favourite of ours for hearty, authentic Jaffna food at a reasonable price. The atmosphere is simple and it can get a little crowded but the flavours more than make up for it.
We love the Jaffna crab curry, which always seems to be the star attraction, along with chicken biryani, chilli crab (nandu), paneer fry and freshly made roti. Portions are generous and the spice levels are brazenly bold.
Ideal for: casual dining and big northern flavours
The Gardenia Coffee Shop: Comfort Food with Character
Cosy and unpretentious, The Gardenia Coffe Shop is known for its homely ambience and walls adorned with quirky artwork. The menu focusses on rich, robust meat curries that pair perfectly with roti or bread.
Popular choices among our team include mutton pepper curry (attu erachi milagu) and beef curry (mattu erachi), but you’ll find a good selection of other meat and vegetable dishes.
Ideal for: relaxed meals and comforting Jaffna-style curries.
Taste of Asia: Quick, Tasty & Authentic
Taste of Asia is a great option if you’re looking for fast, counter-service Jaffna food. Dishes are displayed buffet-style, allowing you to mix and match rice, hoppers and curries to your own tastes.
For vegetarians, we recommend the fried okra curry (vandakkai poricha koottu), dhal curry (parippu koottu) and spinach curry (mulai keerai passali). If you love seafood the crab curry here is wonderful while the traditional fish stir-fry with onion and chilli (karuvadu pirattal) is always popular.
Branches of this restaurant can be found on Galle Road in Bambalapitira and inside the World Trade Centre in Colombo Fort.
Ideal for: quick, affordable and authentic Jaffna flavours.
Café Domus: Casual Café with Northern Influences
Siting opposite the iconic Galle Face Hotel, Café Domus has a welcoming, relaxed café atmosphere and, while the menu isn’t exclusively from the north, it boasts several Jaffna-inspired dishes. Of these, we’d particularly recommend trying the mutton perattu, a biryani-like dish served with mango chutney and onion salad.
Alongside northern specialities, you’ll also find a selection of Western and fusion dishes.
Ideal for: a casual meal in a central location.
